Dr. Nasrin Khan was our guest speaker at Larchmont Rotary's meeting on October 9th at the Larchmont Yacht Club.  She is a physician specializing in internal medicine and physical medicine & rehabilitation. Dr. Khan is also an author.  Her book, Rewire Your Brain, was the basis for her presentation and reflects her passion for personal transformation and helping people recognize their potential. She is also committed to service and leadership in Rotary, currently serving as Area 5 governor in our district and charter president of the Rotary Club of Blooming Rose.

Dr. Khan discussed how to explore our thoughts, past experiences and deeply rooted patterns and how they can influence the way we see ourselves.  She shared how a greater self-awareness and intentional changes in our thinking can help us break limiting patterns, build emotional resilience and create a healthier and more fulfilling life.  “When we can begin to change the way we think, we can begin to change the way we live.”

Her central message is that we may not control every experience that happens to us, but we can learn to recognize the beliefs and patterns we carry forward and make conscious choices about what comes next. Change often begins before our circumstances change. It begins when we learn to notice the story our mind is repeating - and choose a healthier story on purpose.  She presented a five-step process:

  1. Notice: Catch the automatic thought without judging yourself.
  2. Question: Is this thought completely true?
  3. Reframe: Choose language that is realistic and empowering.
  4. Practice: Pair the new thought with a small action
  5. Repeat: Return to the new pathway again and again

We were happy to welcome two guests to our meeting: PDG Marty Schulman from the Bronxville Club and Dr. Fhamida Mohasin, Dr. Khan's friend from Long Island (and hopefully a future Rotarian!).  Dr. Khan handed out signed copies of her book at the meeting's end.
