Kurt Sauer, 97, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 26, 2024 at The Legacy of Lexington, Lexington SC.
Born August 8, 1927, in Alsheim, Germany to Hartmann and E,lla Sauer. He was the youngest of 3 sons. Kurt was trained as an ophthalmic optician in Germany. In 1953 he immigrated to Montreal, Canada. Kurt married Mary Sauer, nee Harty in 1955, and they moved to New York in 1957. In 1967 Kurt became a naturalized US citizen after the birth of their daughter Susan.

Kurt was a New York State Ophthalmic Dispenser. He worked in Manhattan as an optician and manager fitting eyeglasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids. He was an American Board-Certified Optician, a fellow of the National Academy of Opticianry, and a member of national and state contact lens and optical societies.
In 1968 Kurt opened an optical business in New Rochelle NY, and later in Larchmont, NY. (Kurt Sauer Opticians)
Kurt joined the New Rochelle, NY Rotary Club in 1974, the Larchmont, NY Rotary Club in 1978, the North Myrtle Beach, SC Rotary Club in 1995 and the Greenwood, SC Rotary club in 2002. He retired from Rotary in 2004. He had 29 years of 100% continuous attendance in his 30 years as a Rotarian. He held many positions including director and club president. He was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a 10 star Rotarian, and a recipient of many Rotary awards.

Kurt retired from his optical business in 1995, and he and Mary moved to South Carolina. First residing in Little River, SC, and then moving to Wesley Commons in Greenwood, SC in 2002. He was a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood.
Kurt is survived by his daughter Susan of Lexington, SC. Kurt is predeceased by Mary, his wife of 68 years, his parents, and two brothers Ludwig and Walter
A memorial mass will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Francisco Onate-Vargas officiating.
Internment at Our Lady of Lourdes columbarium to follow.
