Brendan McCormack, manager of corporate and community partnerships of Feeding Westchester, was our guest speaker at the Larchmont Yacht Club on April 25th.  His organization distributes “quality, nutritious food to communities in need across Westchester County.”  It provides “access to programs that promote the health, education and nourishment of all who need help.”

Brendan’s slideshow began with an enumeration of statistics:

  • 1 in 3 Westchester households are at risk of hunger
  • 8.3 million pounds of produce were served last year
  • 23.2 million pounds of food were distributed, equivalent to 19.4 million meals
  • 229,000 visits per month were made to neighbors
  • Nearly 300 partners and programs are supported across the county, which include pantries, soup kitchens, schools, health centers and shelters
Brendan then covered Feeding Westchester’s programs in more detail including: emergency feeding, mobile food distribution, retail food recovery, the Senior Grocery and helping people enroll into SNAP.  They also partner with our local food pantry, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force.

He also spoke about starting a local food drive and home projects, where individuals put together small bags of food (Help From Home bags) and drop them off at the Elmsford facility.  He offered to set up a tour of Feeding Westchester’s distribution facility.

Donations are urgently needed, as prices are going up and the need for food is not going down. Federal funding is expected to be cut by at least one million dollars or more.  Their mailing address is: 200 Clearbrook Road, Elmsford, NY 10523 and the website is: FeedingWestchester.org  They can also be followed on social media sites.
